Killeshin Waterworks: Carlow’s Hidden Gem for Dog Walks
Just a short drive from Carlow town, Killeshin Waterworks is one of those places you can easily pass without ever realising what's there.
Tucked away in County Laois, just over the border from Carlow, it’s a peaceful woodland and reservoir walk that’s perfect when you want to get the dog out, burn off some energy and escape the crowds. It’s simple, quiet and easy to walk exactly the kind of hidden gem that’s handy to have on your doorstep.

A Great Spot for a Quick Dog Walk
If your dog needs to burn off some energy, Killeshin Waterworks is a great option.
Allow around 20 minutes for a decent walk, although there are different trails, so you can keep it short or take the longer route depending on how much time you have. The route rises gradually in places, but there’s nothing strenuous about it. You don’t need hiking boots or specialist gear ordinary walking shoes are more than enough. Dogs can be walked on or off the lead at the owner’s discretion, depending on the dog, other walkers and the surroundings.
Dog Swim Zone
One of the best features for dogs is right beside the car park. A small gateway leads down to a flat area beside the reservoir where dogs can easily get in and out of the water. It makes a brilliant little dog swim zone, whether they want a quick paddle or a proper dip before or after the walk.
During the summer months, locals also use this part of the reservoir for swimming and diving, so it can become a bit livelier on warm days. In winter, when there’s more water, the flow can be faster, so that’s worth keeping in mind before letting your dog in.
Woodland, Water and Biodiversity
The walk takes you through woodland around the reservoir, with plenty of tree cover and a good variety of plant life along the way. That biodiversity gives the walk more character than a simple path around a field, and there’s plenty for dogs to sniff, explore and investigate as you go. The woodland also provides welcome shade during warmer weather.
A Little Bit of History
Killeshin Waterworks was carved out in the 1890s to secure a reliable water supply for Carlow town, much of it dug the hard way by hand, with shovels, wheelbarrows and raw labour.
Work began in 1894, and once completed, the water was filtered at Killeshin before being sent downhill to Carlow using gravity alone.More than a century later, you’re not just walking around a reservoir. You’re walking through a piece of local engineering history that was built almost entirely by hand.
Parking and Access
There is parking close to the start of the walk. Cars and small vans can get into the car park, but there is a height barrier at the entrance gate, so campervans won’t fit through. The dog swimming area is also only a short distance from the car park, which makes it particularly handy if you’re bringing your dog for a quick walk and swim.
More Than Just a Dog Walk
Killeshin is worth exploring for more than just the reservoir. If you have a little extra time, you can visit the historic church nearby and take in a bit more of the local area. There’s also a small local shop, handy if you want to pick up a drink or something small while you’re out.
Why It’s Worth Knowing About
Killeshin Waterworks isn’t somewhere you need to plan an entire day around.
It’s close to Carlow, easy to walk and ideal when you want to get the dog out for 20 minutes, burn off some energy and maybe give them a swim as well. You’ve got woodland, water, a choice of trails, plenty of plant life and a piece of local history all packed into one quiet little spot.
