Meet Willow and Bella: Two Paws, Two Ways

Hello! We’re Willow and Bella, two Golden Retrievers with four muddy paws, two very busy noses and one enormous adventure ahead of us.

We’re going to explore Ireland, one trail, one discovery and one pawprint at a time.

You can tell us apart quite easily. Willow has a lighter golden coat and wears a navy bandana. Bella has a darker golden coat and wears a lilac one.

But our coats and bandanas aren’t the only differences between us.

We may walk the same trails, but we experience them in two very different ways.

I’m Willow.

Before I walk through a gate, I like to stop and sniff it. Another dog may have passed this way. There could be sheep nearby, water beyond the trees or something unfamiliar waiting on the other side.

I listen carefully too.

I hear leaves moving, birds calling and rivers bubbling over stones. I can smell wet grass, old trees and muddy pawprints left behind by dogs I have never met.

Sometimes I notice things before Bella does. Unfortunately, Bella has usually started running before I can tell her.

When we reach the water, I take my time. First, I sniff the edge. Then I place one paw in.

Is it deep? Are the stones slippery? Did something just move under the surface?

When everything feels right, I wade a little deeper. I love swimming, but there’s no need to rush a good adventure.

I’m Bella.

Did somebody say water?

I love rivers, lakes, streams and muddy puddles. If it splashes, I want to be in it.

While Willow is examining the first stone, I’m usually halfway across the shallows with wet fur and a very important stick in my mouth.

There is so much to discover that I don’t want to waste a moment.

I follow exciting scents, investigate rustling bushes and greet new trails with my whole tail. Sometimes a bird flies out of the grass and my paws begin moving before I’ve decided where they are going.

Willow thinks I should stop and look more often.

I think Willow should splash more often.

That’s my way.

Better Together

We explore differently, but that is what makes us such a good team.

Bella helps Willow take the next step when something feels unfamiliar. Willow helps Bella pause when rushing ahead might mean missing something important.

Neither of us is doing it wrong.

Some dogs charge towards a new experience. Other dogs need time to sniff, watch and understand it first. The outdoors has room for both kinds of explorer.

Together, we want to discover what makes every part of Ireland special.

We’ll follow forest paths, sniff the salty air beside the sea and listen for wildlife hiding among the trees. We’ll discover rivers, lakes, mountains and quiet country trails.

We’ll also learn where Ireland’s counties sit on the map and explore the landscapes, stories and natural wonders that make each place different.

Every adventure will add another pawprint to our journey.

Life Through Four Paws

We’ll share what outdoor life feels like for us dogs.

That means talking about muddy coats, tired paws, wet ears, fresh water, tasty treats and the importance of curling up for a proper sleep after a long day outside.

Our humans will provide the maps, directions and practical information about where families can travel with their dogs.

That sounds like a lot of reading.

We’ll concentrate on the smells.

There are 32 counties waiting to be discovered, countless trails to explore and far too many puddles to walk around.
