Some days do not need a plan. You just need somewhere open, a bit of fresh air, and the dogs beside you.
That was the idea behind our afternoon at St Helen's Bay in County Wexford nothing structured, just a few easy hours by the water with nowhere in particular to be.
The bay itself has plenty of room to breathe. A long stretch of sand runs the length of the shoreline, backed by open dunes and wide views across the South Wexford coast. It is the kind of space that makes you slow down without even trying — no crowds, no rush, just sand and sky and the sound of the tide.
The dogs were out of the car and straight into exploring, noses down, following trails left by other dogs, seabirds and whatever else had passed through earlier in the day. We wandered along beside the water, footprints and pawprints trailing behind us, the sand firm near the tide and softening as we moved higher up the beach.
Around the edges of the bay, rock broke through in patches, with small pools gathering between them at low tide shells, seaweed, and tiny movements catching the dogs' attention before the next smell pulled them away again.
Before long, they were in the sea. One splashed straight through the shallows without a second thought; the other waded in more carefully, testing the water before committing. They swam together for a while, then raced back along the shoreline, coats soaked and tails going.
With the dogs happily worn out, we wandered up from the beach and found a spot nearby for coffee and something to eat the simple kind of stop that rounds off a good walk. Sitting outside with a warm cup, watching the dogs finally settle at our feet, it felt like exactly the right way to close out the afternoon.
By the time we headed back to the car, everyone was sandy, salty, and thoroughly content.
It was not a big adventure. Just a slow afternoon at St Helen's Bay open space, a swim for the dogs, good coffee, and a little time to enjoy the day for what it was.
